Starting to potty train

We asked our Facebook Likers to post their potty training worries and allow other parents who had experienced the same thing t0 offer solutions as part of a ‘Potty Training SOS’ series.

Here’s what you had to say…

“Advice on how to start it [potty training]. My daughter is 21 months and able to tell me “pee” and “poo” she won’t sit on a potty for any more than a nano second though…. I think she may be ready BUT I don’t want to push her too early.”

Rachael: I was having this problem and my son is 4 in July so was feeling the pressure of starting school. I’d been trying for over a year. Dry Like Me helped with the clean up when he had accidents. I’m not sure what it was but about a month ago we had confidence that he was doing a wee wee and blew off while sitting there. I knew if I got him down in 5 minutes I’d be cleaning him up in the shower, so I asked him if he’d like to do another “blow off” and make more funny noises at the toilet. He giggled and said yeah, he made a few more noises then I heard that wonderful “plop” sound. He was so surprised, I jumped about shouting ‘yipee!’, high fives and even gave him a treat from cupboard. It was hit and miss after that for 2 weeks, but today we are 2 weeks clean! Somehow in the end it just clicked and I needed to find that element of fun to get it going. He’s my 3rd child of 4 so I was not a novice but he was my struggle child.
Sarah: Try bubbles. It has helped my 3 year old who is non-verbal. He will sit on it will clothes on. He will sit without clothes on. But has no idea that he needs or is doing a wee!
Karyn: My son would never sit on a potty so we bought him a set of steps with the toilet seat attached that goes over your toilet bowl. We waited until he was a week off 3 and used the 3 day potty training guide. In the run up to ‘pants weekend’ we explained what was going to happen and read various toilet/potty training books to him. We did as the guide advised and he was dry in 2 days and pretty much at night too (and now wakes us up if he needs to go).
